Buckwheat germinates rapidly, and the dense leaf canopy shades soil smothering most weeds.  Primarily used as a green manure crop it can provide 3 tons of dry matter per acre after only 6 to 8 weeks.  (Buckwheat is both a source of honey and buckwheat milling flower.)  Easy to establish.Buckwheat is not cold tolerant, but will provide wildlife winter feeding on seeds.
